Here’s a summary of Rule 12 according to the ICC’s regulations (For reference to the context wherever Rule 12 is mentioned above):

        Rule 12: Interruptions and Delays

          1. Application of the Rule: Rule 12 applies when there are interruptions or delays in a match, particularly in limited-overs formats like One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The rule ensures that the match can be completed fairly despite disruptions.

          2. Calculation of Revised Targets:

            • Duckworth-Lewis Method: If play is interrupted by weather or other factors, the Duckworth-Lewis (DLS) method is used to recalculate the target score for the team batting second. This method considers the number of overs faced and wickets lost by the team batting first to set a new target.

            • Resumption of Play: When play resumes, the revised target will be calculated based on the new number of overs available to the second team. The target adjusts proportionally to account for the lost overs.

          3. Reduction of Overs:

            • Over Reduction: If play is delayed, the umpires can reduce the number of overs for the match based on the duration of the delay. The reduction is calculated to ensure that both teams have a fair opportunity to compete within the available time.

            • Penalty for Delays: Teams may face penalties for slow play or delays that affect the match's scheduled duration. These penalties could include reductions in overs or adjustments in the target score.

          4. Minimum Overs:

            • Minimum Number of Overs: To constitute a match, a minimum number of overs must be bowled. In limited-overs cricket, this is generally defined as a minimum number of overs for each innings or for the second innings, depending on the type of match and interruptions.

          5. Handling of Tied Matches:

            • Tie Resolution: In the event of a tied match after adjustments and revised targets, the rules set out specific methods to determine the winner, which may include super overs or other tie-breaking procedures.

          6. Umpires' Discretion:

            • Umpires' Authority: Umpires have the authority to make decisions regarding overs, targets, and any adjustments necessary due to interruptions. Their decisions are final and aimed at ensuring the match is played fairly under the circumstances.
